Hawkev (Story)

PART ONE

Matt was sat in his office with his head buried in his hands. Chuck walked in and announced that he was going to visit Steven. Matt looked up and nodded.

"The pressure's getting to you, isn't it?" Chuck said as he stood by the door.

"Just you worry about sorting out our sh$t defence!" Matt replied. Chuck turned on his heel and left as the phone went. "What do you want?"

"I represent Daniel Bulbrook and Michael Baker," a voice said. "I am Callan Davies and they are both willing to join your club for nothing!"

"What's the catch?" Matt asked suspiciously.

"Nothing! All I ask is that you hand me the deeds to one of your houses!" Callan replied innocently.

"Which one?"

"The one I'm calling from!"

When Chuck returned from meeting Steve, Matt was in his office with two 15 year-olds. Chuck blinked then asked "what the f$ck is going on here?"

"Two defenders, £500 per week," Matt replied, "now kindly stop moaning and start f$cking winning!"

PART TWO

"This is too good to be true," Chuck said while he stood in Matt's office.  "Two excellent defenders, how did you get them?"

"Like I said," Matt replied, "a small personal cost!"

"Can't of been that small!"

"I gave their agent the deeds to Hawkhurst House!" Matt replied angrily.

Chuck dropped his drink in shock.  "But that is worth £2,000,000 and it -"

"Anyway, ho about this sponsored lorry pull?" Matt said changing the subject.  He stood up and started pacing around his office.  "500m in teams of 5, I reckon we could do very well."

"Don't change the subject," Chuck shouted.

And we have Hawkev playing live afterwards," Matt continued unperturbed.  "They are going to do it in two halves, the first at the airport, the second at Hawkhurst Park!"

"Who the hell are Hawkev?"

PART THREE

Alan, Thom, Dan and Fawn were all practicing for their big gig at the lorry pull.  Together they made up Hawkev and in their eyes they were fantastic, but not as good as the real deal.  They were a Kevin Bloody Wilson tribute band, even though they were not old enough to buy his music, like most youngsters they had heard it from their parents and loved it.

It was Alan's idea to start it, then Dan and Thom asked to join as they were excellent guitarists.  Fawn was the last to join, as a female voice was on over half of Kev's songs.  Today they were going through the last minute preparations as the lorry pull was in three days time.  That evening, they were going on Invicta FM along with Matt Taylor.

"I think we should probably go through "Don't Touch Your Sister" first," Alan said.  He knew almost every Kevin Bloody Wilson song he had heard off by heart but never knew the exact title.

"Okay in five," Thom said behind him as he began to remember the tune.  "Go!"

"Son gotta talk to you, sit yourself down, your daddy's got something to say," Alan started.  Thom and Dan tried their best to drown his voice out, as that was what they were instructed to do, but Alan was always the loudest heard.  "What you ought to know bout the birds and the bees and to keep you from going astray.  Cause there are some rules that us men folk must follow an life in the farm'll be fine.  You can bang anything that ya find in the hollow but don't touch your sister she's mine!"

Suddenly Fawn fell to the floor holding her hands above her heart.  She was struggling to breathe.  It took a few seconds before Alan realized what was going on and it looked like it was a few seconds too late...

PART FOUR

"Good evening to all our fantastic listeners, I am Andy Walker and you are listening to Invicta FM!" Andy started.  Alan, Thom, Dan and Matt were on Invicta promoting Hawkev and the lorry pull.  They were still waiting for news about Fawn, the last they knew she was on a life support machine, but they did not wish to cancel the interview.

"I am here with Hawkhurst Chairman, Matt Taylor," Andy continued after activating the Invicta FM jingle, "and three of the four members of Hawkev, Alan Collins, Thom Anderson and Dan Bulbrook.  Good evening gentlemen!"

"Good evening," they all chorused in reply.

"So, let's start off with the obvious.  Your female backing singer has recently been taken to hospital after suffering from a heart attack.  How will this affect the gig at the lorry pull?"

"More than anyone would want 5 days before their first gig," Alan said.  "We have a stand-in who is practicing now, so hopefully we will still be on at the weekend, which is exactly what Fawn would want."

"Are you going to be receiving any news about it tonight?"

"Hopefully not!" Matt interrupted.  "If we receive any news tonight, it will mean that she has died, which is not what we want!"

"So now onto the lorry pull, where is the money going?"

"It is going-" Matt stopped speaking as he felt his phone vibrate in his pocket.  It was his girlfriend, Ellie, who was at the hospital with Fawn.

"Not good, Matt," she said down the phone.  Matt could tell she was distressed.  "Fawn's dead!"

PART FIVE

Matt and Thom were sat outside talking to Alan.  The interview on Invicta FM had been suspended.

"How could she have died?" Alan asked.  "How could she have got a heart attack?"

"Ellie said she also showed early signs of lung cancer," Matt replied.  "She must have been a heavy smoker!"

"But surely she-" Thom started before Matt interrupted.

"No," Matt said assertively.  "Her heart has to have been fully working for that to happen."

"What," Alan said, confused.

"Just tell him," Thom urged.

"I suppose I may as well," Matt said, conceding defeat.  "When I was 15, I committed suicide!"
